Whether you're an adult looking to improve your typing speed, or a teenager looking to learn how to type, the free TIPP10 typing tutor software is a very effective way to improve your typing skills in the least amount of time.
With the advance of the Internet and the use of computers throughout every facet of society, typing skill can make the difference between getting your point across, and making everyone wait for you while you catch up. TIPP10 Main Page
When you first install and launch the software, you'll find a simple main page with all twenty lessons listed on the left side, and customizations that are available on the right. You can change how long the lessons last, limit the number of characters in each lesson, how the software responds to errors, and also how the lesson display works.
Keep in mind that this software is intended for individual use - there are no accounts. It keeps track of session information and statistics for one user only. So if you are using this in the classroom, keep that in mind. Individual statistics will only work if you install the software onto individual student PCs.
A TIPP10 Lesson
Each lesson focuses on training the student's proficiency with specific letters. This focus allows the software to train the student's mind to remember the position of those letters on the keyboard through repetition. The words will scroll across the screen at the specific speed that you are typing, so you'll have visual feedback related to the speed you are typing.
Lesson Report
At the end of every lesson, the software will show you a full report of how well you did (or didn't do). You'll see your typing speed in cpm (characters per minute), and your total typing errors. A "Dictation" section also shows you every mistake you made highlighted in red.
Character Placement Recall
Lessons are designed to reinforce your ability to remember where individual letters are, not predicting words. For example, advanced typing students will start to try and predict oncoming words and then type that word instead of what the sentence actually says. This leads to increased typing errors. This software will present seemingly meaningless words like "feoffee". Some students will mistakenly type "coffee", while students that are paying attention won't make that mistake.
Social Sharing
At the top of the report page, after every lesson, you'll also see a "Share on Facebook" button that you can use to post your typing results on your Facebook profile. Lesson Results
If you want to dig even further into the results after each of your lessons, there are other taps that will show you overall progress. For example, the "Overview of Lessons" tab will show you lesson duration, characters typed, errors you made and your typing speed (and overall score) for every one of the lessons that you've taken so far.
Progress Graph
As you take one lesson after the other, you can click on "Progress of Lessons" to see how your improvement has gone up, down or stayed the same. This graphical display is a really good way to see whether you've reached a plateau with your efforts. If so, you can redo old lessons to ensure you've mastered the fundamentals before moving on.
Impressively, the software logs and analyzes a whole list of very detailed information that can help you understand where you're making most of your mistakes and how you can improve. For example, the "Characters" tab will show you a list of characters you've made the most mistakes on.
Character Analysis
This lets you focus your training on those characters, which will increase your overall accuracy.
Another useful area that TIPP10 analyzes is your finger-error rate. The "Fingers" tab shows a report of the error rates you make for each individual finger.
Finger Analysis
This information lets you fine-tune your training sessions to the letters for that finger.
